The Centre for Academic Support brings together units within the remit of the Vice-Rector for Education at the Jagiellonian University, whose areas of activity often overlap. The Centre's scope of work is extensive, but its most important task is to coordinate the educational process—from student recruitment, through the organization of study programmes, to activities supporting graduates.
Every year, in cooperation with the JU faculties, the Centre’s staff develop a unique educational offer of the University for candidates from both Poland and abroad. The Centre is responsible for cooperation with labour market institutions, management of international exchange programmes and scholarship funds, as well as coordination of quality assurance activities. For academic and teaching staff as well as administrative employees, the Centre offers support in the development of teaching competences. The overarching goal of our work is cooperation in carrying out the aforementioned activities, and thereby striving to ensure the highest possible quality of education at the Jagiellonian University.
The Centre includes:
- Careers Service;
- International Students Office;
- Study Support Office;
- Admissions Office;
- Development and Education Quality Office (formerly the Office for Competence Development);
- Student Affairs Office;
- Scholarships Office;
- Section for Online Application Systems;
- Centre for Academic Support Office;
- and since 2023, also the Research Implementation Team.
In 2021, the Welcome Centre was established to provide comprehensive support for international students. Its main responsibilities include providing information on residence legalization, rules and changes in tuition financing, allocating places in student dormitories for international students, and participating in events promoting the Jagiellonian University’s educational offer both in Poland and abroad.
Before the establishment of the Centre, most of its constituent units operated as separate entities. The Office for Competence Development (currently the Development and Education Quality Office), created during the reorganization of the educational division, was a new unit dedicated to enhancing the teaching competences of both academic and administrative staff. The organizational restructuring aimed to improve cooperation between units so that all elements related to education could function as a cohesive whole.
A significant impact on how the Centre's units operate came from a shift in the approach to the quality assurance system at the Jagiellonian University, which became largely decentralized. Before the reorganization, the Quality Assurance Section was responsible for quality-related matters. The new quality policy redistributed responsibility for quality assurance across all Centre units, with a particular emphasis on the Development and Education Quality Office, for example in organizing the Quality of Education Week. It is also worth noting that all reporting activities previously handled by the Centre’s units were transferred to the University’s Office for Institutional Analysis and Reporting.
Detailed responsibilities of each unit within the Centre are available on their respective websites.
